TEN QUESTIONS WITH DONATACHI

|
Written By:

Donatachi is the artist at the forefront of the hyperreal club scene in Australia. Collaborating with some of the best in hyperpop like Ayesha Erotica, Muki and producer D V D, Donatachi is forging a new path, mastering full throttle electronic beats filled with emotion. The artist has just released their new single Don't Wait, ahead of the upcoming EP Ascension.  "I want this release to feel like those club nights, relentlessly hitting you banger after banger, but with a slightly darker tone," says Donatachi. "The new music has been inspired by the visuals and general vibe of Silent Hill 2 and Neon Genesis Evangelion, the imagery is visceral, ethereal and esoteric which is how the new music feels.” We like what we hear, so we spoke to Donatachi about who they are and the music they're creating:

Tell us about your new track Don't Wait. Where did you make it? Who did you work with to bring it to life? What was your intention with all these new songs?

I made Don’t Wait with Melbourne dj and producer D V D who also loves high BPM trance and hard dance. We met on tour and he was playing the most insane set, and I knew we had to make this hyper electro hard trance club belter together. So much of this project was inspired by the video game Silent Hill 2, it’s like an emotionally cathartic visually visceral survival horror game about confronting your demons and I really loved exploring this sonically.

As we’re just getting to know you, give us the Donatachi lowdown. Where are you from, when and why did you first start making music?

I moved around alot as a kid in tiny regional towns all over NSW and I spent a lot of time isolated with just my computer and an internet connection, which is how started producing. i had an older friend who used to go to these underground raves and bush doofs and would make me mixes of techno and trance and introduced me to some shareware music program where i started making bootlegs of pop songs. After school I had nothing going on but I saved enough money working dead end jobs to move to Sydney and go to a few music schools and really learn the craft

You’ve worked with some really cool people in your scene. Who has been extremely influential or taught you something that you’ve taken with you?

I’ve been so blessed to have some really talented friends and they’ve inspired me to push myself harder and think bigger. I was so honored to play alongside the best in the underground on my first Aus tour and that really moved me to make this project more dance focused. Im constantly in awe of people like Ninajirachi and jamesjamesjames and seeing and hearing what they do always makes me want to do more

The hyper pop, hyperreal, electronic scene is growing in Australia but is obviously not at the forefront. Have you fostered a community in Australia? How does it feel making this kind of music in this sort of setting?

i feel like the hyperpop sound is growing here but i'm becoming more interested in the ideas behind the hyperpop movement. when i first started listening to what would become hyperpop on soundcloud it was this really interesting idea of rebellion against music elitism, mixing top 40 pop sounds with diy aesthetics. it was something i could do without a huge team of people, just make the song in my bedroom and upload it to the internet. sonically things are shifting for me but the initial idea is still at the forefront, and it’s exciting to hear the sound evolve

Has Australia inspired your sound in any ways?

the club scene in Australia, acts like skin on skin, Ninajirachi jamesjamesjames and xclub and being physically affected by their beats has really inspired me to make music that doesn't only sound sick in the club but you feel it viscerally. when i first started making music i wanted to sound so polished and international but its something ive become more mindful of in the past year. Punk was such a product of its environment and time and I want to explore that idea more in my music

Which artists inspire you? Musicians, actors, dancers, DJs, painters, authors etc… Any kind of artist!

Robert Mapplethorpe and Jean-Michel Basquiat are visual artists whose work really I admire. I love horror movies, 80s  slashers and Giallo especially Dario Argento films. Anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Perfect Blue have really spoken to me on an emotional level and influenced a lot of the new songs. I’ve been influenced by so many artists but I owe a great debt to SOPHIE and how much she influenced me to think outside of conventional creatively. She really created a space for artists like me to experiment and push the boundaries and i'll always be thankful to her for that

Who would you love to work with? Who’s on the bucket list?

I'm an og angel so Charli xcx obviously, also Sally Shapiro is making music again and she has the most perfect voice and writing I would love to have an itallo disco era

What’s on your playlist right now? Who are you excited about?

Girl EDM by Ninajirachi goes really hard, she’s an incredible artist and someone I'm genuinely excited about each new release, she’s such a star

What’s something you're passionate about and want to use your growing platform to bring attention to -

I really admire what Heaps Decent do for marginalised and underrepresented youth in Australia, helping provide access to creative expression through music is very important to me and something I can't wait to be able to give back to as well.

What’s next?

My new EP Ascension is out this month which I’m really proud of, and I’m so excited to play my new music all over Aus as well as the USA and hopefully Japan. I’ve already started on my next project which is currently inspired by The XFiles, it’s a mix of Dana Scully with Fox Mulder aspirations.
