TEN QUESTIONS WITH EDEN
ICYMI, singer, songwriter and producer EDEN's new album has arrived. The deeply intimate album journeys through EDEN's experiences of loss and life over clever ambient field recordings, hypnotic electronics and smooth R&B beats. We spoke to the artist about the creation of ICYMI and his bucket list collaborations:
We thoroughly enjoyed listening to your album. Congratulations, it’s great. Why did you decide to open the album with A Call?
"At the time when I made A Call it just became set in my head that it had to be the opener. In retrospect it really feels like it encapsulates a lot of what the album feels like to me, both as a prologue and also in terms of sonic exploration."
Where did you create ICYMI?
"Mostly in my home studio in London. Although there are notable exceptions to this like Call Me Back being made in Dublin at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. For the last two years i also kept a mic and interface with me when traveling so there are contributions made from place like Miami, Cancun, and Los Angeles."
What was inspiring you when you were writing? What were you thinking and dreaming of while creating the album?
"Honestly most of the inspiration came from how i was experiencing life during the pandemic years. I was thinking a lot about experience and how we immediately relate what is happening to past events and memories. This lead to this album having a really interlocked web of timelines - feels like a Christopher Nolan film at times to me."
You play around with genres and sounds. Which track was the most experimental and exciting for you to make?
"Sci-Fi, Closer 2, or Duvidha. The first two started life as really fun blends of genres for me. Sci-Fi began as ambient Reggaeton, Closer 2 almost feels like a Drake song if he went to better clubs than whatever beige Mykonian party he got obsessed with."
Lol. We love the visuals for this ~era~. What did you want to evoke? And who inspires you visually?
"I really wanted these videos to focus on people, and those small moments that can feel monumental. We talked a lot about Pedro Almodovar, Sofia Coppola and Hideaki Anno when putting everything together and creating this world."
What did growing up in Dublin givec you in terms of influences?
"I think growing up in Dublin, and while I lived there, it felt like an odd cultural cross roads. I really learned to dig and seek out things that I liked, which is maybe why i have such a wide interest in a lot of genres and subcultures."
You’ve worked with some great artists. Who else would you still love to collaborate with?
"Swae Lee, Dijon, Rihanna, Dean Blunt."
How do you hope people feel after listening to the album from start to finish?
"I'm honestly not so sure. I feel like i just make things for myself and how I feel most of the time. So when it comes to releasing them into the world I feel pretty surprised by people's takes on things sometimes."
What’s something you’re interested in or passionate about aside from music?
"Movies, clothes, food, people.. I feel very interested by culture in general."
What’s next?
"Already working on it. I feel super energised now that this album is releasing and really want to keep the ball rolling."
