TEN QUESTIONS WITH MORGEN
Meet Morgen, the recently turned 18-year-old musician who has an already memorable voice and is winning us over with a hard hitting breakup song. Hammock, her new single, is an upbeat, exhilarating pop song that is the "story of a kid who has no idea how to break up with somebody." Recently moved out in LA and gearing up to release her second EP, Morgen says: "Growing up is not as terrifying as people make it out to be, all you have to do is pretend to know what you're doing and you're halfway there". We spoke to the singer/songwriter about Hammock and her dream collaborations:
We loveee Hammock. We must know, did you break up with said person?
"Yes I did break up with said person haha…It was my first time ever breaking up with someone and I literally could not have been more nervous. I almost threw up."
Haha. Where were you when you wrote this song? How did it happen? It feels like you wrote this one quickly!
"I was hanging out with a couple of my good friends Matias Mora and Cary Singer, who produced hammock, and we were all just chilling and talking about our situations and I brought up the breakup and we kind of just rolled with it. Honestly I don’t remember it being super strenuous to write, but it certainly took a lot of unpacking haha."
Who did you work with, production wise?
"This song was produced by but Matias Mora and Cary Singer, who are two of my all time favourite producers and songwriters."
How do you hope people feel when listening to Hammock?
"Honestly, I was pretty petty when I wrote hammock and thought instead of being a bad person in person I would just put the pent up spite into my music, so I guess if you’re feeling vengeful, I hope this song takes it out of you instead of you taking it out on another person."
Who inspires you musically?
"So so so many artists, I think currently I’ve been listening to a lot of 070 shake, Coin, Tkay Maidza, Flyte, Dijon, Kali, Arlo Parks…there are just so many great artists, and SO much music constantly being put out that I feel like almost everything inspires me in a way, whether it’s hating a piece of music or loving it. You don’t know what you really want to make until you’ve heard something that makes you physically repulsed."
Great list of artists. Who would you love to collaborate with?
"070 shake, Remi Wolf, Tkay Maidza…Arlo Parks…like god, so many people. I have so many artists and producers I’d literally love to collaborate with."
You’ve recently turned 18 and moved out. How is LA inspiring you now? What has been the best part so far?
"LA has recently been inspiring me mostly by the constant push and pull between the challenges I face and the beauty of my surroundings. I think the best part of being in LA has been just being in it, sometimes though it can be very overwhelming trying to manage everything and manoeuvre my way around. There’s a million things to do all the time and when you have a second alone you’re questioning whether or not you’re doing everything you can be doing with that time."
Do you have a mentor?
"I have my manager and my family and my friends…they’re who I trust and who mentor me. I don’t really have like a guru or someone who’s truly taken me under their wing, my manager and I have been working together since we were kids so we’ve kind of grown up together, I guess he’s who I turn to the most."
You seem incredibly creative, we’re excited for your journey. What’s on the Morgen bucket list for the future?
"A LOT. I plan on doing many things in the future such as participating in writing/directing/producing a film of some sorts, possibly a book, I would love to collaborate in the fashion world as well. All this said honestly I just want to be able to do fun shit for the rest of my life…being a paid creative is my goal in life, and a grammy wouldn’t hurt either lol."
What else are you passionate about, aside from music?
"Pretty much anything creative… I love graphic design, painting, writing, movies, fashion, girl anything that is uses the right side of your brain. I also love going on walks, a good walk to a coffee shop and down to the park next to my house can genuinely cure any bad mood i’m in. Also FOOD, yuh girl loves to eat :) snacks on snacks on snacks."
You’re getting reading to release your second EP. What can we expect? What were you exploring on the new project?
"Yes and i’m so so so excited!! Expect colours and chaos tehehee…I was exploring a lot of what I see creatively but like at full saturation. Kind of wanted to take the inside of my brain right now and exaggerate it, basically just amplifying myself and how I view the world. I feel like my first project was a lot of searching and now I’m settling into who I am and how I want to present myself, it’s really fun honestly and i’m super stoked to let this side of me out into the world."
