TEN QUESTIONS WITH THOMAS HEADON
Quite simply, Thomas Headon is back with 'six songs that thomas headon likes and thinks that you would like too'. The new EP from the Melbourne-raised, London-based artist is the soundtrack to a northern hemisphere summer, with a feel-good series of nostalgia-infused, adrenaline-pumping, infectiously upbeat tracks. "These six songs are the first time that I’ve put together a collection of songs without a shared feeling, and more so just six songs that i fucking love, made for the my audience and hope they love too. I wrote these with some of my favourite people from all around the world and I’m so excited that everybody can finally have them, especially after I’ve been teasing them for months." We spoke to Thomas about his newfound freedom felt on the EP and what he's listening to:
Hi Thomas! Firstly let's talk about your new EP. We love the recent single 2009 Toyota, it’s so fun. Tell us about writing it and how it feels having it out in the world?
"HELLLOOOOOO 101010101010. Thank you you’re sweet. Writing it was so fun, I did it in Sydney with my friend Taka Perry. We had a whole week of doing so many songs, most being like inspired by my relationships or my friends or this and that serious stuff. We wrote it on the last day together and so quickly, basically with words that made no sense and just based off vibes. We recorded the vocal so quick, I had to leave for an interview then came back and he had finished it to basically what it is today. So much fun, I’m so happy it’s out."
We’re excited for everyone to hear the new project. It has such a great title. What was your intention with this project?
"Thank you, me too! I think the title explains it perfectly, it’s just a couple of songs that I really like and I want out in the world. It’s fun and way less serious than my last EP, which I really wanted with this project. Nothing really correlates to each other, the artwork is a bit random, so are the videos, there’s no reoccurring theme. All of these things I think most artists or creatives would be panicking about, but this was my entire aim and I’m super happy I’ve stuck with it."
Is there a song you’re most proud of on the EP?
"W4NNA DO is my favourite. It’s just so upbeat, happy, summery and fun. I wanna drive down a highway with the windows down and it on full blast."
How do you think you’ve evolved as an artist and producer in comparison to your previous EP, Victoria?
"I think I just know now more what I, me, Thomas, am like as a person and I want my music to reflect that. It doesn’t always need to be real honest stories that I avoid answering questions about, or serious videos that really portray that. Weirdly enough as honest as the Victoria EP was, this new EP feels way more ‘me’, which I’m so happy about."
How do you hope people feel listening to it?
"I think I would be happy if this was the soundtrack to at least one persons summer. Like they look back and remember the summer they had because they listened to this music while everything happened."
For those who don’t yet know, give us the Thomas Headon lowdown. When did you start making music? What inspired you to express yourself in this way?
"Hello. I’m Thomas. I think I’m 22 right now and I don’t know I’m just here for a good time. I started making music at 16 and happily just kinda fell into it being my job. I love it so much and I don’t want it to stop."
How did growing up in Australia shape your sound?
"I have an unhealthy obsession with indie music. Something Australia does so well and I will never let go. I love that one of the biggest radio stations is one that appreciates and supports upcoming artists and bands that don’t JUST make pop radio tunes. I always enjoy coming back home and going to as many gigs as I can because I really feel like it gives me a new look on how to write."
How has living in London inspired you?
"I really love being in a city that is just stupidly big. I think living here has given me like a jungle to explore, but also one where I feel invisible because there’s always gonna be bigger fish in the sea… and quite frankly I love that. Sometimes the best way to deal with writers block is to go 40 minutes on a train to an area you’ve never been to before, but you’re still in the same city. It’s really mind-blowing."
Who would be the ultimate features for you?
"I’m a massive hip hop fan, someone like Dominic Fike or Tyler, The Creator would be a crazy big achievement. I don’t think it’ll ever happen but it’s definitely a dream to even be in a studio with them."
What inspires the visual world of Thomas Headon? We love your visuals!
"Thank you! I get inspiration from everywhere with visuals, I’m a huge Pinterest fan. Every project I do I always have a massive Pinterest board that I consolidate and present to my team. It really helps keep me on track and sometimes even influences the music I think."
What or who is on your playlist right now?
"I mentioned it above but, Dominic Fike is slowly releasing his album and I’m deep diving back into his catalogue. There’s just so many good songs. Same with Remi Wolf, she released a new song called ‘Prescription’ and it’s on repeat right now."
What is something you’re passionate about, aside from music? Something you’d like to use your platform for?
"This is a really interesting question. I think if we’re being completely honest, I have a platform bigger than most and you couldn’t tell me one injustice, inequality, social problem or issue that I wouldn’t like to help bring attention to in some form. I can’t ever pin point just one of those, all of them obviously matter. So if we were gonna talk aside from that, right now I just wanna keep bringing my audience and friends a little tiny bit of happiness. It sounds ‘cringey’ and ‘cliche’, but I do mean it. Everything is very negative right now… all the time… and if i can do anything to bring someone a tiny bit of happiness then I’ve done my job well."
