TEN QUESTIONS WITH VENBEE

|
Written By:

Venbee is our new one to watch. The rising artist hailing from Kent, who went to #3 in the UK with her track messy in heaven last year, has now released the new single gutter. Venbee says of the song: “It's very much my life story, through the stages.” We love her attitude, her lo-fi style and her lyrics so we spoke about the world of Venbee:

We love your new single gutter! We’re obsessed. Tell us about the song - where did you write it, what was the driving force behind your lyrics?

Thank you! I love that you’re obsessed. I wrote it almost a year ago with my friends Whyjay & Litek. I honestly couldn’t believe I had turned 20. I’ve gone through a lot in my short life and wanted to write a song showcasing that side of me.

How do you hope people feel listening to gutter?

I hope people feel less alone & in a way, relieved that they aren’t the only ones who feel like this. I would like it to give people a sense of hope when difficult things happen that they might not understand at the time. Difficult things happen in life, but it’s all about how you move forward and grow from them.

We also love the video. What do you look to for visual inspiration? Films, other music videos etc…? What makes up the visual world of Venbee?

Thank you! I often try to match the stories I’m telling (which are usually quite dark) with a visual that’s more fun and lighthearted. When I write songs I usually see them play as a movie in my head already, so I always have some sort of idea brewing. I like when my videos look a bit DIY and not super high production. I don’t want people to watch my videos and go, ‘ugh that was depressing.’ I want people to watch them and go ‘wow that was cool’.

You’ve had some great success recently. Why do you think people are resonating with your music?

Honestly I have no idea. I think it might be because I’m so honest with my lyrics and don’t try to hide anything. Sometimes that gets me in trouble but I also think it’s been the biggest blessing.

You’re from Kent - how do you think growing up there has shaped your sound?

I think growing up in Kent has most importantly influenced my writing. I witnessed a lot growing up. I like to write about my own experiences but more often than not, other people’s experiences. Kent inspires me to tell stories of struggle, challenge and change.

Tell us the backstory behind making music. When did you begin making music? What inspired you to do so?

I’ve been writing a song a day since I was 8 and my granddad taught me piano, and I eventually taught myself guitar. After secondary school, I studied musical engineering for a year and then started producing my own music in 2020. Music has always been the one thing I’ve been good at. It’s my way of figuring out the noise in my head and making sense of it.

Who is on the Venbee bucket list to work with? Ultimate feature?

Oh gosh SO many people are on this list but I’ll name a few. Billie Eilish is way up there. I think she’s amazing. Finneas as well! I also love Yungblud, Lola Young and RAYE.

We love your style, you look great. Are there any brands or designers you love? What’s the ethos behind your style? - if there is one!

Hahaha thank you, I honestly don’t know what my style is. I’ve always liked being comfortable. It’s my #1 priority for anything I wear. I love Tommy Jeans, Nike and Adidas. My dream collaboration is with Gucci. That’ll be for something special though. Get me a Gucci suit, please.

For those who don’t know, why ‘Venbee’?

It’s a spin-off of my middle name. I was releasing music under a different name before but it was hard to find when you searched for it and so I changed it last year. Guess I’m stuck with it now haha!

What’s next?! What are you working on? We’re excited for more music.

SO SO SO much! I’m finishing up my EP right now before I head out for a summer full of festivals! (Please come dance & sing with me!!!). I’m so excited for the next few months I feel like I’ve been in the longest gestation period ever with this project. I’m ready to birth it and for the world to listen!!
