TEN TALKS TO DORA JAR

|
Written By:

Dora Jar is part of the new wave of alt-pop artists we're loving listening to. The New York-born, LA-raised musician is currently on tour with Billie Eilish, and has just released her new single Bump, on which her vocals are reminiscent of Elizabeth Fraser's (specifically on Massive Attack's Teardrop), but her writing continues to nail the confessionary style, similar to Billie's. "I wrote ‘Bump’ when I was living in Poland & for the first time in my life I didn’t really know anyone in that city except for the family I was staying with so I wasn’t bumping into people I knew anywhere," Dora says. "This song felt like a prayer to encounter a meaningful coincidence & eventually it began happening, not with people I knew, but I would see images from dreams manifest in real life, and it sparked this feeling that life had been waiting for me to take note of all the little details because they are leading me somewhere." We spoke to the artist about touring and her brilliant influences:

We love your voice! And your music, of course. When did you begin writing and making music?

"I started writing my own songs over guitar chords from Foo Fighters songs when I was in middle school. Always been singing though, making up jingles and from young, young times."

You’ve been touring with Billie in America. How has it been? What have you learnt from her?

"It is a huge honour to warm up the stage for Billie. Her fans are the best in the world. I’ve learned so much from her, but specifically on tour I’ve learned that with an open heart you can make even a giant arena feel cozy."

You’re also opening for Billie in Australia - yay! What are you most looking forward to about coming to our part of the world?

"Meeting so many new people! Everyone has been so kind so far and supportive. It’s so nice to connect to new fans online and hear their experiences and I love it when people come say hi in hotel lobbies. I’m staying in a lot of the same hotels as Billie fans so its always nice when we get to meet face to face.

You were born in NY, raised in Cali. How have these places influenced your sound?

"The frenetic chaos of new York and the expansive landscapes of California both make their way into my sound for sure."

You also spent time in London - what do you love about it there?

"London is full of so many different cultures, fashions, music scenes and people from all over the world. The first time I heard Grime music my life changed. London is always ahead of the curve in terms of music."

Incredible artists have shown their support of your music. Who has been the most mind blowing for you?

"Obviously Billie is mindblowing. I have loved her music since the beginning. And her kindness and general willingness to nerd out about music together has just been the biggest pleasure to experience. Also Remi Wolf I love her so much, her voice gives me chills and her imagination is endless."

Who would you love to collaborate with?

"I would love to collaborate with David Lynch on a music video, and musically would love to sing with Billie one day, and also Dave Grohl."

Who or what have been some of the inspirations for the world of Dora Jar?

"Old Disney films, Stephen Sondheim musicals like into the woods, Foo Fighters, OutKast, Gwen Stefani, Oklou, Nick Drake, The Beatles."

You have great style. If you could work with a brand on custom tour looks who would you love to  have dress you?

"Maharishi."

How do you hope people feel listening to your music?

"I hope people feel their imaginations expanding and they feel liberated, powerful, compassionate, and full of the ecstasy of life that we all deserve to feel."

What’s next? Are you working on new music? What can we expect?

"Yes, lots of new music, expect a mystery to unfold."
