TEN TALKS TO EVES KARYDAS

|
Written By:

Eves Karydas is feeling empowered. The Australian singer/songwriting has renewed her love of music - and herself - through the creation of her recently released album Burnt Tapes. From first composing at age 11, to creating a platinum hit in 2018, she found freedom in Stockholm where she wrote her most honest music yet. In this new, confident state of mind, Eves talked to us about her love of music and her top ten tracks to listen to, while wearing CHANEL’s limited edition exclusive Première Sound watch, that doubles as wired headphones:

Give us the Eves Karydas lowdown. When did you begin writing music?

I wrote my first song when I was 11. It was called I Want To Be An Angel, which, I dont know, is a pretty cool title for an 11-year-old. A year later I got my first guitar and then music became my entire personality. Pretty insufferable, really. But it seems to have paid off because all these years later I’m now actually earning a living from songwriting! After a long while of being signed to labels and management, I have just released my first fully independent and self-managed album. It’s called Burnt Tapes.

What or who inspired your musical journey?

Always Joni Mitchell and Carole King. Many other inspirations have emerged over the years but those two will forever shine as my north stars.

Who have you worked with who has helped to shape the world of Eves Karydas.

I’ve had so so many incredible collaborators over the years but more than anything, my career has been a long journey of learning to trust and back my own ideas. That’s why I chose to go independent with my new album Burnt Tapes. I made all the artwork and videos myself and had very few people involved in the actual making of the record. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it - and I did!

We know that fashion and style is important to you. How would you describe your style?

It’s a definite gravitation towards feminine timeless styles while also embracing an element of edge, modernity and androgyny. The women in my answer below definitely embody what I’m talking about.

Who are your style icons?

Chloe Sevigny, Rosalia, Bianca Jagger.

Describe your sound, for those first time listeners?

While I’ve always lived in the 'indie pop' realm, my new record blends folk, emo, new wave and yacht rock... if you can’t imagine what that sounds like, you’ll just have to go listen to it!

If you were to score a fashion show, which piece of music would you include?

Separator by Radiohead would sound incredible on a runway.

‍What’s on your playlist at the moment? Which artists are you excited about?

I cannot for the life of me stop listening to the new Mk.Gee album, Two Star & The Dream Police. And Charm by Clairo is fantastic.

If you had to listen to one artist for the rest of your life on your headphones who would it be?

Very hard question, but Joni Mitchell. Or Lana Del Rey.

What’s something that’s inspiring you right now aside from music?

Spring...!

What’s next?

I’ve got a couple of summer festivals coming up, and am tinkering away at a few new things too...
