THE GENTS WHO DAZZLED AT THE MET GALA
It’s not just the princess dresses, vintage Chanel frocks and Doja Cat meowing down the red carpet that had people talking about last night’s Met Gala. The first Monday in May saw a slew of VIPs ditch the traditional black tux, as showbiz gents continue to push the boundaries of red-carpet dressing.
Celebrating the opening of Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s retrospective of the late designer’s work, a slew of guests paid homage to Lagerfeld’s signature uniform. NBA star Dwayne Wade opted for a regal, Prada cape, worn over a leather biker vest, and actor Brian Tyree Henry wacked up the volume in a ruffled shawl. Usher turned to British menswear maven Bianca Saunders to create an updated interpretation of Lagerfeld’s sharply tailored get-up, whilst Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan donned a suave Dior suit and Lagerfeld’s beloved fingerless gloves.
Olivier Rousteing took the Lagerfeld homage up a notch, creating a 30-foot cape for actor Jeremy Pope which featured Lagerfeld’s portrait. Rousteing also cleverly paid tribute to Lagerfeld with his own look, donning a ‘Karl Who?’ tote like Lagerfeld’s back in 2009.
Moving beyond the Lagerfeld-isms, celebs continued to eschew traditional tailoring. There was the outrageous: Lil Nas X’s naked body bejeweled in 218,784 Swarovski crystals, for instance. Or Jared Leto rocking up dressed as Lagerfeld’s beloved kitty, Choupette. There were also more subtle subversions. Like Bad Bunny’s backless Jacquemus suit and rose train, Skepta’s duck-printed Burberry suit or Pedro Pascal ditching trousers for some Valentino shorts instead.
