TEN QUESTIONS WITH KITA ALEXANDER
Kita Alexander is exploring 7 Minutes In Heaven. The Byron Bay born and raised artist has released the second single, a thoughtful, soft pop song to tease her upcoming album. Kita says the song, “aesthetically and sonically encapsulates my forthcoming album. This song is my buddy and my best friend.” We spoke to Kita about creating the new track:
We love 7 Minutes in Heaven. It’s got everything we want in a song. Tell us about writing it.
"Hello!! aw thanks so much, me too actually.. I'm pretty obsessed with it. When we were writing this song my co-writes and I were actually really inspired by Dido's white flag. We really wanted to write a chorus that was timeless and melodically really hit home. I think we nailed it."
Tell us about your process and your collaborators on this track?
"Thom and Andy Make were my co-writers on this song, thom was on guitar and he played a really great chord progression. I sang the first 3 words of the chorus "Just let it go" genius lyrics I know haha, and then Thom just started flowing with the following melodies. As he was singing the melodies, I was looking through this glazed window that went into a little cupboard, it made me immediately think of the game 7 minutes in heaven. That thought transported me back to sneaking out to go to parties as a teenager and doing naughty things. I wanted to write a song about letting go of all the rules and boundaries we put on ourselves. A song to remind me to loosen up sometimes and just have fun without thinking of the repercussions."
The last time we spoke to you, you’d just released The One. How do you think you’ve evolved sonically and writing-wise since then?
"I think I'm really just coming into myself more and more. Knowing what I like sonically. Writing wise, I feel like my lyrics are becoming smarter and even more personal. I'm really, really loving story telling about little moments in my life. Fleeting emotions and thoughts that I can tap into and create a story out of."
Best place to listen to 7 Minutes in Heaven for the first time?
"Park your car at a beautiful lookout point with an incredible view. Park, wind the windows down and play this song."
The music video is great, we’ve mentioned before we love your visual world. Who did you work with on the video, tell us about shooting it!
"Thank you so much! I actually managed to rope my husband into being the main character with me. His only condition was that he remain a little mysterious..,For these songs I'm releasing this year I'm really turning towards visuals that actually represent my life, not creating a beautifully perfect cinematic video that really feels out of touch. I worked with Jaen Collective. They're the first group I've worked with for 2x videos. I really think they've nailed my aesthetic so far this year."
You’ve mentioned this aesthetically and sonically encapsulates your forthcoming debut album. We’re excited! What has inspired the album?
"It does! But I'm not going to say anymore than that haha."
"Have your children heard the album? :)"
YES!
Fisher recently previewed a new song with you at Coachella. How did it feel to see your song being played at such an epic festival?
"The first weekend it played, it didn't feel real. The fact that, that many people were moving and dancing to my song. It felt unreal. The second weekend we started seeing people freak out over the song, begging for it and saying it was their favourite song of the festival. The response has been crazy."
Who’s on your playlist at the moment?
"The 1975. I've only just discovered them, I kind of feel ripped off that I didn't start listening sooner."
What's something you’re passionate about aside from music - is there something you’d like to use your platform for?
"There are definitely things that I'm passionate about, but I don't think I want to use my platform to speak about topics that I'm not properly educated in. My platform is for my music and I'm really passionate about keeping it that way."
