TEN QUESTIONS WITH EVIE IRIE

|
Written By:

Evie Irie loves Danny DeVito - so she made a song about him, of course. The LA-based Australian-raised artist is in her punk-pop era, releasing the modern day answer to a 2000s rom-com-esque hit. Evie's new single 'I Want It (Danny DeVito)' drops today, inspired by the sounds of the 90s, with that super-speed adrenaline-inducing pulse. The inspiration behind the song is simply her favourite things. It felt only right that we ask 10 Questions to get the Evie Irie lowdown:

Your new single is so fun. We have to begin by asking, what do you love most about Danny DeVito?

I LOVEEEEE literally everything about Danny DeVito. He is an incredible actor, an amazing father and just simply an icon. I have a rule that no man/boy is worth writing about. My ONLY exception is Danny!

Tell us about creating the single. Who did you work with? How do you hope people feel listening to it?!

‘I want it! (Danny DeVito)’ is the first single from an upcoming project I've been working on. It was really important to me that when I made the upcoming project, including this record, I aimed to have the most fun and creatively express myself as much as possible. My producer Xavier Dunn was the most incredible person to work with because he pushed all of my limits and allowed me to say anything and sing any way I desired. So I hope that people feel the joy, love for music and FUN that went into making this song.

There’s a sense of 90s-inspired punk in the single. Who are some of your influences? Who inspires you musically?

I grew up listening to Debbie Harry, Jonni Mitchell, St. Vincent, Alanis Morissette, and Gwen Stefani. Although not all are punk artists, I’ve been extremely inspired by how incredibly powerful and tireless these women are. They have paved the way for artists like me to express themselves in whatever way they desire, whether sonically, emotionally or visually. I owe so much of my bravery to get on stage and put myself out there to the iconic women who showed me what that looked like.

You moved to Nashville at 15, but prior to that, how did growing up in Australia shape your sound and style?

I love that I grew up in Australia. I was a really active child, always in nature, swimming in the ocean, kayaking, hiking or skiing in winter. And since most of the sports I participated in were competitive, it shaped me into the competitive person I am today. When I moved out of the city in my early teen years, I found a community of artists and musicians that I began playing with who inspired me to write music and practice that skill, which ultimately led me to Nashville and to my crazy life and profession that I have now.

How has America changed your sound and influences?

Moving to LA at 16 was when my sound significantly changed. It wasn't that I had changed or my musical influences changed much, but I began working with pop producers for the first time. They were able to execute my vision and work with me to create my original pop sound. Since then, working with different songwriters, artists and producers from all over the world, my taste and knowledge has expanded, and I'm able to bring all of that influence into this record and new records that I will be releasing,  with the help of my incredible co-writer / producer Xavier Dun.

Who would be the ultimate features for you?

Right now, I would love to collaborate with Danny DeVito. If you know him, send him my way! But outside of this single, my ultimate features would be Drake and Madonna. Jean Dawson is also killing the game right now and would be very fun to collaborate with too.

What inspires the visual world of Evie Irie? We love your visuals.

I wish I could just show you my Pinterest board because I curate the tone of my world there. I save a lot of colourful, eclectic, high-energy, mixed-medium pictures. Random ideas pop into my head all the time that shape and inspire my visuals too.

What are you listening to at the moment?

All of my mixes for the music that is to come… Hehehehehehe.

What is something you’re passionate about, aside from music?

Ahhh, I really love this question. I'm passionate about learning new things in life and experiencing as much as this world has to offer. I'm passionate about spending time with the people I love and, of course, spending time with my family.

What’s next after this single comes out?

Hopefully, a trip to Europe! I would really like a holiday. I took a year off music, and getting back into it this year has been incredibly fun and exciting, but ya girl is ready to chill on the beach for a week (at least).
