TEN QUESTIONS WITH HAIKU HANDS
Haiku Hands are partying hard. The Australian alt-dance trio have released their second single this year, Ma Ruler, an upbeat, chanting party anthem about having a damn good time. Of the track, the band say: “'Ma Ruler' smacks you in the face like your best friend’s just arrived at the party. The one you’ve been waiting for who'll drive the dance floor into the ground and no one will leave once they’ve arrived." We like their style. We spoke to Mie and Claire about the new single ahead of their string of US tour dates:
The new song is so fun. Tell us about writing it?
Mie: "We started writing Ma Ruler on a writing camp in Bali. I had fun writing the chorus for Ma Ruler. I had recently been to a bunch of banging parties in Sydney where I live and was still in that cheeky mood. I feel like this track is a nod to the playful, chaotic, sometimes euphoric feeling that a party can create.”
Who did you work with on the song?
Mie: "The legend Motez wrote the beat for Ma Ruler and Yoda Joel wrote and recorded with us when we started the track in Bali."
How do you hope people feel listening to it?
Mie: "I hope people make ugly face, forget about everything and thrash their head and body around when they listen to the track. And laugh with joy."
Your recent release Nunchucka has had such a great response. Are these singles leading up to a bigger release... ? :)
Claire: "Yesss! We’re stoked with how much Nunchucka is being played on radio and streamed so far. Happy to hear people are enjoying it! We’ve been writing new songs that we’re excited to share and have started playing some of them out live to see how they feel which has been fun."
We love the visual world of Haiku Hands. Is fashion important to you? How do you create all your visuals?
Mie: "Thank you! We love fashion, we all really appreciate and get joy from shapes, textures and colours. Fashion is such a great and accessible way to express yourself, which can be very fun and healing. Our photos, film clips, merch and costumes are made by a bunch of different creatives that we vibe with."
Who is on your playlist at the moment?
Mie: "Jaded, Swisha, Skeleten, Shygirl, Mount Kimbie, Niasha, Overmono, Electric Fields."
Ultimate Haiku Hands feature?
Claire: "Bjork."
Dream place where you would love to perform these new songs?
Mie: "Governors Ball Music Festival, Fuji Rock, Glastonbury Festival, Lollapalooza, Primavera, Sziget festival and at a doof/rave with a really good sound system."
What else is important to you aside from music? What are you feeling passionate about at the moment?
Mie: "Taking care of our mind and body and enjoying our life is important to us at the moment and always. We all value and need community, friendships, mushrooms, good speakers. I am feeling passionate about nature at the moment, I am getting a lot of peace and joy from it. I am really grateful for what it provides and I feel very inspired after spending time in nature.”
What’s next?
Mie: "We’re currently on tour in America, about to play Governors Ball and a bunch of other fun shows, we’re doing writing sessions over here with a few people like Mad Zach who we wrote Onset with. When we get back to Australia we’ll keep working on songs and then have a bunch of shows coming up over summer!"
