TEN QUESTIONS WITH LOLA SCOTT
Lola Scott is back for a new era with a new sound with High School Drama, the pop single with amusing lyrics over 90s grunge-esque production. The artist from the Southern Highlands has had a massive 2023 already, supporting Men I Trust, Holly Humberstone, Clews and Teenage Dads on national tours, as well as a slew of writing sessions with local pop acts, and signing to new management. It's all coming up Lola Scott. We spoke to the artist about the new track, which Scott says was written about, "avoiding the drama of schoolyard gossip and a bit about how great my ass is and taking back my power back from relationships that don’t serve me,". We like her attitude:
We love the new single. Tell us about the day you wrote this song. What was the catalyst for this track?
We were in the middle of a couple of weeks of writing very heart wrenching emotive break up songs and my co-producer was also processing a break up at the same time. I think on this day we were sick of moping about in our feelings and just want to make something high energy and fun. I had a friend that was pissing me off with some petty drama but a lot of the lyrics are just gibberish that I was rattling off almost subconsciously. We kept calling them place holder lyrics and laughing at how stupid they were and then they stuck.
Did you have references for the production? Other artists, books, movies etc…?! Who did you work with on it or was this one made solo?
Yes we definitely had a bunch of references that I was sending to my co-writers/ co-producers on the way into the studio that morning. I sent through some sonic youth, maybe the cure and some blur. There’s also references to Grease characters Sandy and cha cha. And a reference to the show Zoey 101. I made this track with my favourite people to collaborate with - Oscar Sharah (Mel Blue, Osworld) and Pat Byrne (Beso Palma).
We love the idea behind this song that great minds discuss ideas… So tell us, what is something you’ve been thinking about recently, something that has been inspiring you or that you’re passionate about?
It’s not so much the concept behind the song but I do try live without the ‘high school drama’ style gossip that evolves around talking shit about other people. I’ve been journaling a lot recently, and journalling a lot with friends in parks. I’ve been really inspired by the people around me. I feel like we are all trying to find the most genuine versions of ourselves and talking risks out of our comfort zone to put all we can into our passions.
How do you think High School Drama shows the evolution in your sound and music?
Honestly it’s not like any songs I’ve done before and not too similar to anything I have coming. The similarity it does share with the music I have coming is that it was written with a band in mind and trying to use minimal electronic instruments. After playing High School Drama at a bunch of shows I definitely plan on writing more songs with feral brat energy cause it’s so fun to play live.
You’ve been working with and supporting some incredible artists. Who has been someone you’ve worked with who has been super influential on you - what have you learnt from them?
I feel like I’ve learnt so much from so many people so it’s difficult to narrow it down. One of the things that has stuck with me the most is how friendly and humble all of the artists and producers that I have been supporting and working with have been. Another thing that I’ve found really refreshing is working with people who share the same attitude towards creating music where we can feel very creative without judgements in the room and be just playing with instruments until we find something that excites us.
Who else would you love to work with?
I’d love to work Maro, Ellie Roswell (Wolf Alice), Slow Pulp, No Rome, Kate Bollinger, Billie Marten, Alice Phoebe Lou.. ahhh there’s so many people I’d love to work with
We looove your style. Tell us about this part of your world - is fashion important to you? Who inspires your style?
Thank you so much! My love for thrifting has resurfaced over the past year. Definitely inspires by friends… particularly my housemate Amy. We’ve got a joint wardrobe now and do a lot of thrifting together. A lot of the time I’ll buy shit and be unsure how to style it so I love when Amy puts together outfits combos that I wouldn’t have thought of so I can steal them later. Also shout out Hannah Brewer (check out her music) who has the ultimate style and has helped me out with styling from time to time.
Who’s on your playlist at the moment?
I’m currently listening 1 TBSP’s new Album ‘Mosquito Love’. I’ve been listening to a lot of folky singer-songwriters… Billie Marten, Adrienne Lenker, Alice Phoebe Lou, Kate Bollinger, Maro, Field Medic as well as such big bandy moments.. Fontains DC, Wolf Alice, Sonic Youth, Blur.
What has been the best moment so far?
Woah big question… in my life or in my career??
I big peak this year would have been when Emma from Men I trust told me they’d personally selected me to support them. I love everything they make and they are a big inspiration/ I respect the whole band very much as musicians so I was very flattered to be picked to support.
Is this the start of a new era? What’s next?
Yes very much so. I’ve been writing a shit tonne. Expect a lot of guitars and a lot of nostalgia… come check out the live shows to hear a peak at what’s coming next.
