TEN QUESTIONS WITH QUINNIE

|
Written By:

We've had quinnie's music in rotation over the last few months, and now her debut album flounder has grown with five new tracks. The LA-based indie-folk artist has won us over with her quirky, clever songwriting and sweet, nostalgic melodies. Creating music with her best friend and roommate, Jake Weinberg, quinnie has magicked up her wonderful world from her bed with her cat by her side. We spoke to the artist about the deluxe version of flounder:

Your debut album is so special and we’re loving the deluxe tracks. Why was it important for you to release these bonus tracks? How did they add to the world of flounder?

"On a personal level, releasing these bonus tracks was an important lesson in showing more than what is perfectly curated. It feels good to get what i believe to be good songs off of my chest without having to worry about how they contribute to larger image. I just think these songs have the capacity to be enjoyed and thats all that really matters at the end of the day."

Did you create these tracks at the same time as working on flounder, or did these come in the months following the release and just felt like they were part of the same world?

"All of these songs were written at the same time as flounder but for one reason or another they didn't feel like a good fit on the original album."

We love that your music is inspired by world underwater. What is your favourite body of water that has transported you to another realm and left a lasting impact on you?

"For sentimentality’s sake, the Jersey Shore planted a seed of wonder in me at a very young age. Back then, i would spend every day of the summer face down in the shallows and was satisfied simply spotting a tiny hermit crab. However, these days, i live in LA and my favourite beach is here in Southern California. Its a really special cove with incredibly vibrant tide pools and i can just get lost there for hours. Any beach will do for me tho. When I have a bad day I tell myself not to worry because I'll find myself at the beach soon."

What else was inspiring you as you were writing this project?

"I was inspired by a certain compass that i found within myself while navigating early adulthood. So much of this album is about learning trust, and I think the most important trust you can have is in yourself that you know the answers deep down."

How has Jake Weinberg helped to shape your sonic world?

"Jake and I have been working together since we were 18 and so our skill and taste has really grown together in a special way. Jake has a very important knack for truly listening to what im saying and finding a way to let the words be supported by sound instead of covered up."

Your songwriting is so beautiful. Which artists/songwriters have been influential for you?

"My biggest songwriting inspirations through the years were probably Joni Mitchell, Karen Peris of the Innocence Mission, Tracy Chapman, and Evan Stephens Hall of Pinegrove. I try not to directly reference any songwriting these days tho so all these influences i think really may just show up subconsciously if they do."

How do you hope people feel listening to your music?

"Overall I just hope some people feel understood."

Ultimate place to listen to flounder (deluxe) in full?

"In the trunk of your car, parked by the ocean while daylight is fading."

What’s something no one yet knows about the creation of this album that you can tell us? :)

"I named the album flounder before i wrote the song flounder and i said to myself 'quinn, you better make a really good song called flounder or else that will be really embarrassing'."

What’s next?

"Another album! yippeee!"
