TEN QUESTIONS WITH STEVAN
Stevan is back with a new, slick sound on six new tracks. The new EP, Loners Club, sees Stevan creating a new sonic landscape for himself on his own terms. Produced and written solely by himself, Stevan says: “When I was making the EP I think I was searching for something. Through the production and songwriting and also self-expression. These songs came together as I was working through a lot of personal stuff. And I want my fans and see the growth both as a producer and a songwriter.” We caught up with Stevan for the first time in three years, to dive into his journey and what's inspiring him:
Congratulations on your new EP! The last time we spoke to you was in 2020. A lot has happened. At the time you told us you’d just learnt to play a range of instruments and had also learnt to express yourself ‘in a healthy way’. What would you say you’ve learnt about yourself through the process of creating Loner’s Club?
I learnt how much more work I have ahead of me in terms of instrumentation and “healthy” forms of expression. I was 19 last time we interviewed I definitely didn’t know what I was talking about. But hopefully on this EP my real life experiences trickled down into the music. I learned about talking about stuff I didn’t wanna talk about. And bring comfortable with myself.
What would you say to Stevan of 2020?
It’s gonna get worse before it gets better.
Where did you write the EP? What was inspiring you? You sound super empowered and confident on it?
I was in a share house in Darlinghurst. In my bedroom with all my instruments. I was listening to a lot of Tame Impala MGMT and Pond. I think that was the starting point. To be honest I was trying to work through a lot of personal stuff. The experience didn’t feel empowering at the time I think I got more of a “letting go” vibe.
Who did you work with on these songs?
No one. It was a very lonely creative process but that’s how I like it these days. I think I got swayed in a few different directions in the past. Due to a lack of confidence but since 2021-2022 I’ve doing my own thing again. And loving it.
What do you hope people take away from listening to this EP?
Whatever they find relevant and useful. I made it to express myself and I think I did a pretty good job. If it helps explain or identify a feeling or an experience for the listener then I’d be happy with that.
You’ve achieved so much in the last few years. Has there been a standout moment?
I think Splendour was a huge one for me. Being on the same bill as Tyler The Creator & Jpegmafia like damn. The younger me never thought this far ahead. That moment was amazing!
We love the quote from you that you don’t see how you can fail. Have you got any mentors in your life, or perhaps have you read/watched anything that has inspired your mindset?
Really recently I’ve been listening to this audio book by 50 Cent. It’s called Hustle Harder Hustle Smarter. It’s been changing everything for me personal life included.
We love the visuals for this EP. What was inspiring the visual side of your world for this chapter?
This is least hands on I’ve been when it comes to the visuals. I think I was inspired by wanting to see someone else’s perspective. When it came to the sonic converting to visuals and I think Julia did a great job!
What’s something that’s driving you at the moment, something you’re passionate about aside from music?
I want to be successful - it’s a pretty simple motivation but it’s become a strong force in my mind. I just feel like I get “it” whatever “it” is when it comes to building value. I want to succeed in way more than music and that’s a first for me. The past 5 years music has been my whole life. So looking ahead to all the possibilities is exciting and scary.
What’s next?!
Touring, collaborating with international friends, resting and then my debut album.
