Van Cleef & Arpels Treasure Island Collection
High jewellery is always a feast for the eyes. From collections that draw from the natural world to others that allude to shapes and colours to those designed to transport the viewer back in time, the possibilities are endless. For Van Cleef & Arpels’ latest, Treasure Island, the inspiration was equally as fantastical. Like its name implies, the pieces are an enchanting journey that draws heavily from Robert Louis Stevenson’s book, albeit through a fantastical lens. Combining 120 years of exceptional craftsmanship with a generous helping of literary inspiration, the results were unveiled in a special showcase this past weekend in Miami. Where else would we go for a swashbuckling adventure? Read on to learn the 10 magical things about this extraordinary collection.
1. A Classic Adventure Sets the Scene
Van Cleef & Arpels found their muse in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, bringing the legendary tale of hidden treasures and exotic adventures to life. The Maison’s talented designers and craftsmen imagined what wonders could be tucked away in treasure chests scattered across far-off lands.
2. Miami: Glamour, Glitz, and Luxury
A handful of lucky editors were whisked away to Miami for a dazzling reveal of the collection. Picture this: luxurious boats, private island vibes, and an inside look at what VIP clients experience before selecting their favourite pieces. It’s not just shopping – it’s an extravagant, unforgettable experience.
3. Pirate Lore and Hidden Secrets
The launch kicked off with a boat ride to Villa Lagorce, where we delved into fascinating pirate history with L’École School of Jewellery Arts. From the misunderstood world of pirates (they weren’t all rum-drinking good for nothing!) to stories of ancient treasure chests, the experience was steeped in mystery and wonder. One key takeaway: the legendary Cheapside Hoard is a real-life treasure trove filled with emeralds, diamonds and rubies from around the world that has now been broken apart and put on display at London’s British Museum and the V&A.
4. A Story Told in Three Chapters
The Van Cleef & Arpels Treasure Island collection unfolds like an epic tale. Chapter one celebrates sailors and the art of navigation, with intricate pieces inspired by knots, compasses, and shimmering seascapes in shades of turquoise, emerald, and moonlit silver. Chapter two honours nature, showcasing vibrant seashells, radiant flowers, and majestic trees. And finally, chapter three takes us on a treasure hunt across the globe, with designs inspired by ancient cultures, from pre-Columbian marvels to Asian wonders.
5. Our Favorite Piece: The Palmier Mystérieux Clip
If there’s one showstopper, it’s the Palmier Mystérieux clip. This masterpiece features detachable elements: a boat of diamonds, a radiant sun, and a treasure chest sparkling with gems. With its velvety green emerald leaves and intricate rose-gold trunk, it’s a testament to the Maison’s craftsmanship.
6. The Literary Stunner: The Hispaniola Clip
This dazzling clip pays tribute to Treasure Island’s famous ship. White gold sails set with diamonds capture the wind as if ready to take off on a high-seas adventure. Every detail, from the engraved hull to the sparkling bowsprit, evokes the grandeur of 18th-century ships.
7. Pirate Clips with Personality
Meet John, David and Jim – the mischievous trio of pirate clips! These whimsical designs bring the story’s characters to life with playful details like feathered hats, textured jackets, and tiny gold treasures. Consider it high jewellery with a sense of humour and adventure.
8. Island Life IRL
Pieces like the Palmeraie Merveilleuse necklace evoke lush palm leaves and vibrant island colours. At the heart of this necklace is a breathtaking 47.93-carat emerald cabochon, set like a treasure waiting to be discovered.
9. A Treasure Hunt for the Ages
Jewels in this collection showcase a kaleidoscope of colours and influences from around the world. The Ornement d’Alexandrina ring, for example, pairs a mauve sapphire with emeralds and garnets, evoking the elegance of Victorian cocktail rings with a bold modern twist.
10. A Spectacular Finale
The launch ended with a gala dinner at the Vizcaya Museum, complete with a Michelin-starred meal by Chef Emmanuel Renaut. Guests enjoyed a theatrical show featuring musical sailors and models adorned in the Treasure Island collection. It was the perfect conclusion to an unforgettable journey.
