TEN QUESTIONS WITH BLUSHER

|
Written By:

Meet Blusher, our favourite new pop girlies on the block. The three-piece Melbourne-based band have released their latest single Dead End, and it sounds good, feels good. After recently signing to Atlantic Records/Warner Music Australia, Blusher is joining Aurora on the Australian and New Zealand legs of her tour. We met the band over 10 Questions ahead of their Australian shows:

Congratulations on everything that’s happening for you. How did you guys form the band?

"Thank you! We formed in late 2021, after knowing each other through the music industry for a while with our solo projects. At that point, it had been a long time since we were able to go out for a big dance with our friends, so we all had the urge to make energetic, danceable pop music that reminded us of those nights. Lauren got us together for a songwriting session and we instantly clicked - it felt like a rare moment of finding your collaborative soul mates."

We’ve read you guys produce as well as write everything. When did you all begin writing/producing?

"Jade grew up in a musical family, playing with her parents in an ABBA tribute band, which influenced her love of melodies and pop songwriting. Lauren downloaded garageband on an ipad and learnt to produce, becoming fascinated by layering vocals and playing synths, and Miranda was a classically trained violinist before she rebelled by picking up a guitar and writing her own songs. Before the band started, we were each pursuing music as solo artists, producers and songwriters for a while, so coming together felt like a combining of forces where we realised how compatible we were in the studio."

We love Dead End. The pop song we need. Tell us about the story of how this song came together? Did you work with anyone on this song?

"Thank you so much, we’re so glad you like it as much as we do! We went into the session that day feeling nostalgic, and we each shared stories of our first nights out, trying to escape suburban boredom. Miranda told the story of using a fake ID to get into sticky-floored clubs, and crying the night she got caught. We pictured a run-down club called the Dead End, where you find yourself on a Tuesday night having a terrible and fantastic time. The song is about a feeling of teenage restlessness and those questionable weeknights where you’d go out just to make something happen, and how we still want the grunge and glamour of those late nights with our friends - we haven’t really outgrown that feeling at all.

"We wrote and co-produced it with Robby De Sa, who brought such an amazing energy to the session and the track. His distorted guitar parts really mirror the feeling of chaos in those nights, and help the production to convey that feeling of wanting to escape."

What have you learnt from each other since embarking on this journey together?

"Miranda has taught us a lot about The Office (specifically the toxicity of Jim and Pam’s relationship). Jade has taught us about how making cupcakes and candles for people will make them feel the love. Lauren has taught us of the many similarities between cooking and music production (often metaphorically referencing Ratatouille). Really, we’ve learnt so much from each other about music, the creative process, performance, self care and perseverance - but the aforementioned lessons are the real stand outs."

You describe your sound as ‘angry sparkly pop chaos’ which we love. Can you pinpoint any artists who have inspired your sound?

"Kesha, Robyn, MGMT, LCD Soundsystem, 80’s synth-pop, drum machines and vocal samples,  house music, and hyperpop."

Who would you love to work with? Other artists, directors, producers etc…

"We have a pretty long list of dream collaborators, and hopefully we’ll get to tick some off on our writing trip overseas next month! Dream writing sessions would include St Vincent, Oklou, Fred Again.., Charli XCX, Jim-E-Stack, Rostam, Sky Ferreira."

We’re looking forward to seeing you on tour with Aurora. We’ve read you worked with a movement coach - what did you learn from this? What can we expect from tour?

"We want our live set to be really fun and high energy. You can expect lots of choreographed dance moves, all of us swapping instruments on stage, and each having different moments as the ‘lead’ singer - we’re all Beyonce in this scenario."

We love your style already. How do you coordinate your looks and what inspires the fashion side of Blusher?

"We take inspiration from 70’s Gucci, Japanese street style, fairy-core, and local Melbourne designers, and combine it to really express each of our individual personalities. Like our studio sessions, it can be a sort of organised chaos - everyone bringing their suitcases to someone's bedroom, emptying out their favourite clothes and seeing what works well together."

And we must ask for those who don't know yet, why ‘Blusher’?

"We loved the imagery of being a ‘blusher’ -  someone who can’t help but have their emotions on full display. Whether it’s the flushed cheeks of a crush confession, or an expression of frustration or anger - we channel those emotions into our songwriting and couldn’t hide them even if we tried to."

What’s next for you?

"We can’t wait to head on tour with Aurora in a few days! It will be our first tour, and first ever show outside of Australia, so we’re very excited. After the tour we’ll be heading straight to the US to do lots of writing sessions, hang out with our incredible Atlantic team and teach them all the dance moves from our show. We’re looking forward to turning our AirBnB into one long Blusher sleepover and home studio and seeing what songs come out of it."
