TEN QUESTIONS WITH ETHAN TASCH
Here at Ten Towers we've been spinning Ethan Tasch's debut album Got Him!, which effortlessly infuses his indie-pop hooks with flashes of folk and touches of country. Featuring collaborations with Remi Wolf, Wallice, Boyish and Spill Tab, the album is simply a great album to put on and zone out to - which was exactly Tasch's intention. We gave Tasch the 10 Questions treatment, and were treated to a playlist of the elite influences behind his songwriting and the album:
Congratulations on the release of your debut album - which song are you most proud of on the album?
“Come Onn” was the last song I wrote for the album, and it felt like such a good representation of the project as a whole.
What did you hope to achieve on this album?
I just wanted to make something to put on. I felt like in the past if you weren’t listening intently with headphones and hearing every word you’d miss the point, and with this project I just wanted to make something that would feel good to listen to regardless of how you were interacting with it, but still without ever sacrificing lyrics.
What was inspiring you when you wrote these songs?
I was feeling kind of stuck and lost in a few ways, and I think the album is both a documentation of that journey and a call to action to do something about it.
How do you hope people feel listening to the music?
I hope people hear the album and get a sudden urge to go on a walk.
You have some cool collaborations on the album. How did these artists/producers/writers contribute to your sonic world?
The artists that sang background vocals are also some of my best friends and I’m so honoured to have their voices on the album. spill tab added an element of class to “Holdup” just from being a great vocalist doing an intense amount of stacked harmonies, and Remi gave “Shell” a swagger that I can’t pull off by myself.
Which artists have been key north stars for you for this album? Was there music that was directly influencing you while you wrote it?
I was listening to a lot of music that isn’t necessarily country but is definitely country influenced like Faye Webster and Alex G, but also Kacey Musgraves was a big reference in the sonic world. We actually had her pedal steel player, Drew Taubenfeld, play on five of the songs which was a treat and helped give it that twangy feel.
What will you do differently going into writing your next project?
My goal for the next project is to capture the essence of who I am in every song. My favourite artists make music where you can almost tell what it would be like to be around them in a non musical setting through their music. I want the next project to be like I’m hanging out with the listener.
What have you been listening to recently?
The new Japanese House album, Big Thief as always, and the new Flyte singles.
What has been inspiring you recently - aside from music?
I just started watching How To with Jon Wilson and it’s somehow incredibly stupid and incredibly profound at the same time.
Which songs would you include on a playlist of influences behind your craft?
Motion Sickness - Phoebe Bridgers
Golden Hour - Kacey Musgraves
Cattails - Big Thief
Re: Stacks - Bon Iver
Slow Dancing In A Burning Room - John Mayer
Still Beating - Mac DeMarco
Anthony Kiedis - Remi Wolf
Here Comes The Sun - The Beatles
What’s next?
Tour, more tour, more music, repeat.
