TEN QUESTIONS WITH GAO
The future is bright for GAO. Bridget Gao Hollitt has been exploring an unfiltered side to herself, from right under her skin. The Australian-based model and singer/songwriter has created a raw, honest and electrifying debut on the five-track EP, how was that for you. It feels like, in Bridget's words, "a small acoustic primal scream". Our kinda music. We spoke to the artist about the deeply sincere body of work and what's to come:
Your EP is such a beautifully honest body of work. Why was now the right time for you to express yourself through music?
Thank you. I think the timing of it had more to do with the level of faith I had in writing the way I do, which in large part was due to Johannes, and being in LA with very few tethers to identity already baked in.
The project is incredibly vulnerable - you’ve described it as coming from under your skin. What was on your mind as you were writing these songs?
I wrote stream of consciousness so it was all what was just there, ready to be blurted out. Quick like a papercut. I was processing a huge love loss, but also the addiction element of that love and trying to extricate one from the other.
How do you feel now that the project is out in the world for everyone to listen to? How do you hope people feel after experiencing it?
I hope that people can find a little bit of love for their gooey, clunky stuff.
Who did you work with on the EP?
Johannes Burger, producer/mixer/masterer extraordinaire. We recorded and produced the whole thing between my living room and his bedroom. It was such a once in a lifetime way to make something and I’ll cherish it forever.
Tell us about the title of the EP (we love it).
This project was a big question mark as to where it would fall in people’s minds. I had absolutely no clue if it would land at all, so it felt like an accurate title. I like that most of the content of the project entirely defiles any sexual feelings you might have. It's so raw and self-deprecating. But making stuff is always kind of like getting naked and doing a lewd dance in front of others, so it's kind of erotic. Kind of like… I mean I know that was weird for me; was it weird for you too?
Is there a song you’re most proud of?
block u got to be a bit surreal in the end which I really love. Daddy we recorded in one take, keys and vocals, so that was an intensely connective, special experience.
We love your style - how have you dreamt up the visual world of GAO?
I have been inspired by a lot of incredible women. I love magical realism and just slightly weird stuff. I am really excited to flesh out the visual world more and more.
For those who don’t know - why ‘GAO’?
Gao is my mother’s family name. She is the part of me the music comes out of.
Which artists would you love to work with in the future?
Charlie Kaufman, Spike Jonze, Charlotte Wells, SZA, Grace Ives, Issy Wood.
What’s next?!
Keep making things!
