CHANEL CELEBRATES CRUISE 2022

Chanel know how to party. Last week the House hosted a harbourside soirée to celebrate the Cruise 2022/23 collection. Tiny tennis racket shaped Chanel bags, mini baby pink and deep blue tweed sets, clever all-in-one shirts tucked into shorts, and double C stamped sneakers have arrived in Australia.  Ooh la la. To celebrate, French musician and Chanel Ambassador Sébastien Tellier played an epic set alongside drummer Daniel Stricker and 10 Magazine collaborator, singer and flutist Byron Spencer. We spoke to Byron about collaborating with Sébastien and his musical journey:

10 Magazine: How was the experience collaborating with Sebastien Tellier? Were you a fan of his work beforehand?

Byron Spencer: “It was super beautiful and I was very lucky. Daniel who is Deep Faith with me has the most idyllic location in Tamarama for us to work on music, so we worked from there before ,which always I think infiltrates the vibe of music as it is so close to the ocean. As for being a fan, I was but I did not know a lot of the music, but I was introduced to him through Daniel so was aware of a few things, but again, so lucky!”

10: What was it like working on the compositions for the pieces you all played - did you work closely with Sebastien on these or freestyle harmonies?

BS: “We basically just ran the set a few times and just let it flow naturally. It all evolved naturally and was really fun and beautiful for me to watch unfold, as working in this kind of capacity is still quite fresh to me - I can only really properly relate it to back when I was in an orchestra.”

10: Did you have a favourite song on the night?

BS: “Obviously La Ritournelle is such a big song and super impactful, and so to be able to do big opera like falsetto on it at such a quintessential Sydney location was so cool.”

10: How long have you been playing the flute and singing?

BS: “Flute, weirdly for ages… I don’t even want to say because I just counted on my fingers… but a lot. I did however abandon it for many years weirdly as I just moved away from it and lost a bit of that side of me. I can still play but technically I am not where I was when i was bloody 18 and doing crazy training. But I guess it is fun to move into new rebellious territory with it hehehe. Singing, I think i always was probably doing quite young, and I went to a church school and did all the chapel choir stuff and then moved into the classic gay drama boy musical theatre era.”

10: And what was the best part about working with Chanel?

BS: “The fact that it is Chanel which is just so CLASSIC of the classic, chic fashion, and they were all really awesome and amazing. It was fun to not be seen as a photographer by them.....a new fun feeling within this world.”
