TEN QUESTIONS WITH DAYGLOW

|
Written By:

Dayglow has got us glowing. The Texas-based artist has recently released People In Motion, his highly anticipated new album. Infused with all the good vibrations of the sparkling, sun-soaked world of Dayglow aka Sloan Struble, it is his most beguiling, supercharged work to date. “I make music because I love making it,” said Struble. “I just love recording and producing.” We spoke to the artist about writing the new project and his recent tour around Australia:

You can definitely hear how much you love creating music on this album. What were you inspired by and thinking of while you were making People In Motion?

"I mostly was just inspired by live music in general. I wrote this record after coming back home from a lot of touring– something I didn’t have the opportunity to do with Harmony House or Fuzzybrain. I wanted to make a record that felt big and high energy and dance-y and just fun. I love how James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) achieves that balance, so I think he influenced this record a little bit!"

How do you think you’ve evolved sonically on this album? Were there production or writing breakthroughs?

"I went into this record without any rules. I just wanted to make an album that felt like I was just free and not trying to achieve something trendy. I wanted the songs to feel like my attempt as a solo project and producer on making pop songs. Kind of like early MGMT where it’s “poppy” but not really. I wanted this record to feel really imaginative too, so I used lots of fun new synth sounds and just explored as much as I could with no boundaries."

What did you learn about yourself while making People In Motion?

"I think I felt a lot more confident making this record. I felt the freedom to be a little more artsy and open with what I was doing. I felt like I had fans that were excited to see what I would do sonically as a producer and that gave me the freedom to expand my sound into what People In Motion is."

You compare Dayglow to a Tame Impala collaborative project. Is that purely the live-show aspect or did you work with anyone else on this album?

"I use that comparison just considering how popular Tame Impala is and how people understand how their dynamic works. I think sonically and socially my project is pretty different, but the creative process seems to be very similar. I record and produce all of my music by myself, so no one else worked on the record!"

How do you hope people feel listening to the album - especially long time Dayglow fans?

"I hope people see my maturity as a person and musician to continue to evolve with everything I release. This record is specifically the most dance-focused one I’ve made so far, so I hope people just feel encouraged to let go both emotionally and physically and just enjoy the gift of music."

Is there a song you’re most proud of on the album?

"I love Second Nature. It just feels so fun and bold. I think in context to People In Motion it fits, but compared to Fuzzybrain or Harmony House it’s so different yet feels like a Dayglow song. That’s always my favourite challenge; just to expand the possibilities of what I can fit into my discography and still have it all feel linear and cohesive in the grand picture."

You recently spent time touring in Australia. Did you enjoy it? :)

"Yes I really loved Australia! It surprisingly reminded me of Texas a lot. It’s so strange to think that a place on the complete other side of the world reminded me so much of home. It honestly really helped me understand human nature a little bit more and just see that people are just people no matter where you go and everyone kind of wants the same things and asks the same questions about life. That seems very profound but I guess that's what travelling does! I also drank Red Bull out of a shoe three times."

How has life in Texas influenced your sound?

"Honestly very little. I’m mostly inspired by things online and things from the past, so my location has never really influenced what I make… at least not that I can tell!"

As you should. For those who don’t know - why ‘Dayglow’?

"I came up with the name when I was 16. I just wanted something that didn’t necessarily mean anything yet felt like its own thing. There was a song I loved at the time called “Day Glo” by Brazos, and I just went with it and it’s stuck!"

What’s next?

"I’ll be touring so much for the next few months for People In Motion. This show is so incredibly fun and I feel like I’m in such a good place spiritually and creatively. Hopefully I’ll be back in Australia soon!!!"
