TEN QUESTIONS WITH KITA ALEXANDER
Kita Alexander is the one. The singer, songwriter and mother has recently released her new EP, The One, featuring six tracks made between Sydney, Melbourne, LA and London. Collaborating with writers and producers including Dan Nigro, Julia Stone and Teddy Geiger, the EP is, as Kita says, "a collection of songs that were born in the past. Almost all of them began even before my own kids were born and were then finished across zoom in the covid lockdowns. For me these songs have had such a special hold on my heart, so much so that I felt I couldn’t create anything new until these tracks saw the light of day.” We spoke to Kita about making music as a mother and what inspires her:
Congratulations on the EP. It sounds like you’ve been through so much since you began writing this EP. How have you evolved since the beginning of creating this EP to now?
"Thank you! I’ve evolved into a mother and a wife which I think is I think the coolest thing ever."
You have such a beautiful voice. When did you begin singing? Tell us about your musical journey.
"I started singing in school choirs maybe in year 3. I loved it. I had classical training although I don’t think you’d ever be able to tell that. I was in the national choir for a few years. Eventually I started singing at open mic nights with my sister and we gained a bit of local attention. My career only ever really continued because I noticed people noticing me and I thought hmm maybe I can make something more out of my hobby."
How did your upbringing in Australia influence your sound?
"Being immersed in a beautiful landscape like Australia is the beginning of all my music. When I’m working out Melodies I usually start riffing around on the word sun or summer or something to day with water haha."
Are you creating music differently since becoming a mother?
"Yes my music is consistently at a higher level! I don’t have time to waste anymore because I feel like I’m missing out on precious moments with my children. If I write one bad song all I can think about is wow that time could have been spent with my kids at the beach, so I’m rarely having bad songs anymore which is really awesome."
You worked with some great people on The One EP like Dan Nigro and Teddy Geiger. Tell us a little about these collaborations and what they brought to your sound and songwriting?
"I was working a lot with Dan before he blew up with Olivia Rodrigo stuff. He’s an incredible person and an insanely talented writer. We always just had a great time in the studio. He taught me so much about songwriting structure and how you can always strive to make a song better. My few sessions with Teddy were really cool. At the time I was really interested in more rock music from the 70’s and 80’s and tried to push a couple of our songs that way. We always wrote cool hooks together. I took the chorus hook from the song we wrote together and turned it into Memories of You at home on my keyboard."
Your lyrics are so brilliant. Which writers, poets, songwriters have inspired you over the years?
"Stevie Nicks, the poet Rumi, Queen really inspired me in the past; but now interestingly R&B artists like Dijon and Cautious Clay are really inspiring me lyrically!"
We love your style, your whole vibe really solidifies your sound. How important are the visuals to you and how do you magic up the visual world of Kita Alexander?
"You know what I don’t really think about my visual too much, I feel really lucky that I can just be honestly myself in my music and vibe. I live at the beach basically and I think so does my music."
Who is on the Kita bucket list that you’d love to work with on your next project?
"Flume is very high up, I also think a collab with Rufus Du Sol could be super cool."
What’s something that is inspiring you today?
"Today sleep is inspiring me, I’m extremely sleep deprived and a little bit hungover from the Arias last night."
What’s next for you?!
"Next is my debut album. I’m sooooo excited."
