TEN QUESTIONS WITH SAMRECKS

|
Written By:

Meet SamRecks. With an undeniable flow, the Nigerian-born, south London-raised artist has been making his mark and rising up, one single at a time over the last year. The recent release, Back Pack, continues to showcase 22-year-old SamRecks’ remarkable talent. We spoke to the artist about his writing process and his love for fashion:

We love your new single Back Pack. It has such a good flow and ease to it. Tell us about writing and creating this track?

Thank you, honestly making this one was a major throwback. I was in the studio just talking about things that happened to me and my friends, in secondary school and college then T.O sent me a beat pack which had the BACK PACK beat. As soon as I heard it, I knew this one was a vibe because of the conversation me & my engineer (ABiggy) had it just inspired me to talk about a BACK PACK because that’s the first thing you put on to go school and from there I just had fun with it. I wanted to approach the way I came on the chorus differently so I chose to just ramble on with what I was saying, almost mumbling out the flow and that turned it into the chorus you hear now once I added words, gave it some style with some pitched add libs and just really had fun with it while talking about all the things that made me fall in love with music and keep it going.

How do you think living and being raised in South London has shaped your music?

It’s shown me a lot of life lessons, friends, family, snakes, good times & bad times. When everything’s happening in the moment you don’t really think this is gonna make me write this kind of song one day but as I grew older and started reminiscing on certain things, it just inspires me. I literally just write about the things I’ve lived through. If I lived somewhere else my music wouldn’t be what it is now.

We’ve read you were born in Nigeria but moved when you were young. Do your West African roots influence your sound?

It definitely does, I’d say it impacts my flow and the angle I come on the tracks subconsciously, even the way I think about certain things is all impacted by my culture back home and parents

What’s your process like? Where do you do most of your writing?

I write any and everywhere, even when I’m bathing and an idea comes to my head, I’ll keep saying it till I’m done then run to my phone to write it down so I don’t forget it. Life inspires me, so I just write about what I’m going through or conversations that inspire me.

Is there a song you’ve created that you’re most proud of so far?

I’d say I’m most proud of all my recent songs, the elevation in the topics and depth I go into now compared to my old songs is crazy, I don’t know what I’m gonna write next or say next but I know something will spark an idea and that idea will turn into a song. I just pray the right people hear it and connect with it as much as I do.

Who are you working with that is helping to solidify the sound of SamRecks? Do you produce?

I work heavily with my engineer & my broski ABiggy, he’s an important part of the journey, as much as I am. We spend countless hours in the studio working on sounds and perfecting each and every song, we both work on the production of every song I put out. We don’t just get a beat and use it like that, we do a lot of things behind the scenes to get it to sound like a SamRecks song. One day I hope everyone can see the hardwork we put into each song.

Can you pinpoint any artists or specific projects from artists that have had a big impact on you?

There’s been a lot of artist that inspired me back in the day but when I head Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid Mad City it really made me want to rap, the story telling, flows, sounds everything I was like yeah man I’m gonna write.

We love your style. Is fashion a vital part of the SamRecks world? Any designers or brands you love?

I love fashion, it allows me to express myself not only as an individual but how I feel that particular day, I can wake up one day feeling casual or another day I wanna wear something eye catching or a vintage look or Y2K look but no matter what I wear, I make it me and that’s what will always make me stand out because everyone’s different. I don’t really care bout the trends, I just wear what I like.

What is something you’re passionate about - aside from music?

I’m really into art. I use to draw back in the day but I stopped cause I didn’t have time to sit down and actually draw but I’d love to get back into it.

What’s next? What are you working on? We’re excited for your journey!

I’m working on a project that will properly introduce me as an artist to watch and represents the journey to get me here. To get to this point, a lot of things were easier said than done but we’re here now doing it so I want to put it out there to the world
