TEN TALKS TO MVLHOLLAND

Mulholland is on the rise. The singer/songwriter who is based in Byron Bay has been travelling around the world throughout her life, growing up between Australia, Bali, London, New York and LA. The new single ‘6ft Baby’ is perhaps Mvlholland’s most vulnerable yet - a therapeutic breakup song, which she wrote while she was heavily heartbroken. We spoke to Mvlholland aka Grace about the song and where she’s at in her journey right now.

“When you love someone for the first time it doesn’t really go away, it just shifts into a different kind of love,” she tells 10 from her home in Byron. “I feel like I was in shock during my break-up. We broke up in a 10 minute period. It was very intense… Every time I took a step forward something would happen and I’d take 10 steps back.” Mvlholland did what all great artists do during a breakup: she partied, blasted the 6ft Baby to mutual friends and began therapy. “It consumes your whole life. I felt my whole world revolved around this situation I had no control over.” The single, which begins with the lyrics - ‘I couldn’t find my shirt today, I wonder if you took it when we went our separate ways. What a pathological piece of shit you were to me that day - and now you’ve gone and stole my fucking shirt’ - has ensued a flood of listeners DMing Mvlholland to ask if she got her shirt back. (She didn’t). It’s the kind of break-up song that is filled with a heartbroken rage and is frustratingly too relatable.

That knack to create deep lyrics comes from growing up in a household where musicians would come to stay, including Bono, Natalie Imbruglia and Divinyls front woman Chrissy Amphlett. Mvlholland began writing songs at age 11. “I feel like I cared a lot less when I was younger,” she says. “I think when it became serious I felt a lot more pressure to be good. No one ever put pressure on me and my parents speak very highly of me. My dad is my biggest fan. Eventually I’ve just learnt you’re a good as you say you are and as good as you work to be. Just work hard and be kind. It’ll work.”

Now, she’s working on the music for her first EP. “I’m releasing a strong sad song. I love sad music. It’s the best thing to listen to.” Taylor Swift inspires her songwriting (her current favourite off Midnights is You’re On Your Own Kid), as well as Lorde, Alexander 23 and Harry Styles. Right now, she’s listening to early 2000s pop music, naturally. “I personally stick to the classics. Nothing hits like that anymore.” She’s learning that what people say about her is none of her business, which is one of the most “powerful” things she’s learnt. “I just want to do what I want to do without interruption.” So, she’s off to Harvest Rock festival to close out the year and will be finishing a new single the week after that. “I’m excited for next year, it’s been a big year. Time helps, everyone! It definitely helps… And having that faith.”
