We’re feeling sneaky for the summer. Apple Music is giving us the goods today with exclusive DJ mix sets from Australian artists. Sneaky Sound System are up first on our listening list, as they celebrate 20 years (!) of Sneaky Sundays, one of our favourite pastimes. In celebration of a new mix from the masters, we spoke to Angus McDonald of Sneaky Sound System about curating the perfect set:

Congratulations on 20 years of Sneaky Sundays. Do you have a favourite Sneaky Sunday memory? 

"Oh my god there are so many. The early days when we first started in a sweaty basement in Bondi with 100 people crammed in, and another couple of hundred in the line, was so much fun. Of course we did about 700 Sundays at Hugo’s Lounge (RIP) in Kings Cross and that was literally the time of our lives. It was wild… what a ride."

Best lesson you learnt when you were beginning to DJ? 

"Only play the records you love, let someone else play the other ones."

What is the secret sauce to a great DJ mix? 

"It’s all about the journey, where there’s a story from start to finish with some unexpected turns along the way."

What makes a bad mix…?! 

"Chucking the latest tracks in the computer and key mixing them. No feel, no vibe. It needs to be imperfect and have surprises, at least in my mind."

Which artist or song do you always play in a mix?

"I always seem to play a lot people whose names start with D. Dennis Cruz, Dennis Ferrer, Demuir, Deetron, Darius Syrossian, Dario D’Attis, Daniel Steinberg, D’Julz, Doorly…I could go on."

Favourite place you’ve played a set? 

"Pacha, Ibiza."

You’re throwing the ultimate SSS summer party. What are we listening to?

"Sneaky Sound System, of course."

What are we drinking?

"Connie’s Margaritas: tequila, lemon, maple syrup."

What is the vibe?

"All systems go."

Hell yeah. DJ mix motto?

"I can’t honestly say I have one, but how about, 'just make it really good'."
